Four Rainy River citizens received the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal Saturday at the Rainy River Legion.
Don Budreau, Manny Nordin, Gerry Marchuk and Joe Kaliska received the honour for being persons who “made a significant contribution to Canada, their community or to their fellow Canadians.”
All four recipients served the Legion as President, with Marchuk currently holding that post. Budreau also served as Mayor of Rainy River and Marchuk has and is still sitting on Rainy River Town Council. Kaliska served as a Northern Affairs Officer helping many citizens with day to day needs. He has also taken an active role in recognizing the special contributions of veterans.
Both Budreau and Nordin are World War II veterans.
As legion executive members their service to Rainy River was exemplary. Many projects like the construction of the new hospital, a facelift for Hannam Park and hundreds of other worthy causes benefited from there hard work.
The obverse of the medal bears the current effigy of the Queen; the reverse side, the Royal Crown above a single maple leaf which is superimposed the Royal Cypher.
Some 46,000 Canadians will receive the medal, which marks the 50th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s accession to the Throne on February 6, 1952.
