The Lake of the Woods 15U team has been busy the past two weekends. They participated in the Branigan’s Snowflake tournament in Roseau the weekend of Jan 3rd. The team took home a second place finish overall, with a Friday night win over East Grand Forks (5-1), a Saturday morning loss to Moorhead (3-1), and a Sunday morning tie with Roseau (1-1). The team was pleased to finish second in this tournament, but little did they know what the following weekend held in store for them.
The weekend of January 10th brought the first ever 15U girls tournament to the Baudette arena. Teams participating were Fort Frances, Roseau, Grand Rapids, and the host team, Lake of the Woods.
Lake of the Woods opened the weekend with a 4-2 victory over Roseau, with two goals coming from Sam Reinert, and additional goals from Meaghan Jasper and Amy Hasbargen.
On Saturday, Sam Lyon’s goal proved to be the deciding factor in a 1-0 win over Grand Rapids. Assists on that critical goal went to Danielle Rudd and Sam Reinert.
Later that same day, the girls defeated Fort Frances by a score of 8-4. Scoring were Amy Hasbargen (2), Courtney Bitter (2), Danielle Rudd, Deanna Baron, Sam Reinert, and Natalie Ramiller.
This set up Sunday’s championship game between Lake of the Woods and Roseau. The girls were down 0-1 in the second period when Sam Lyon popped one in with about ten minutes left in the period, tying the game at 1-1. The game remained tied into the third period until Brittany Fish scored on a one timer with an assist from Amy Hasbargen. That goal came around the 6 minute mark and turned out to be the game winner as the girls held on for a 2-1 win, and a 1st place finish in the tournament.
Congratulations to the girls for a job well done, and a big thank you to the parents, the Olson’s, Julie Clark, the fans, and the referees for a successful and well run tournament.
The girl’s next home game is on Tuesday, Jan 14, at 7:30 pm against Warroad.
We hope to see you there!
