42 area kids qualify for provincial chess championships

Last Monday 61 students from Rainy River to Mine Centre participated in the 15th Annual Rainy River District Chess Tournament at Crossroads School in Devlin.
Of those 42 qualified to go to the provincial chess tournament being held in Thunder Bay on October 24, 2009. To qualify a player had to score 2.5 out of 5 possible points in tournament play. At the tournament two kids, both from Riverview School in Rainy River, received perfect scores. They are Moriah and Lemuel Carradice for which they each received a $10 bonus prize.
Prizes were awarded to the top three in each of the age groups. This year the prizes were chess sets donated by the Royal Canadian Legion, Major Hughes Br. 54 in Rainy River.
The winners were as follows:
Age 7 and under
1st-Naomi Carradice-Riverview School (RR)
2nd-Joanna Empey-Crossroads School (Devlin)
3rd-Reed Dennis-Mine Centre
Also qualifying for provincials in this age group were Cherish Johnson (MC), Cole Trimble (Dev), Brett Allan (Dev), Ben Smith (Dev) and Sekine Scheibler (Sturgeon Creek in Barwick).
Age 8-9
1st-Lemuel Carradice (RR)
2nd-Dee Jay Trenchard (RR), Darryl Jonasson (RR), Gethan Wood (RR), Gavin Sakshekapo (Dev) and Jessica Empey (Dev).
3rd-Ryan Stewart (MC) and Jacob Barker (Dev).
Also qualifying for provincials in this age group were Tiffany Morrison (MC) and Rebecca Fraser (RR).
Age 10-11
1st-Moriah Carradice (RR)
2nd-Bethany Sinninghe (RR) and Joey Angus (Dev)
3rd-Brandon Whitecrow (MC) and Alex Stewart (Donald Young School in Emo)
Also qualifying for provincials in this age group were Ryan Bodnar (Dev), Janelle Haas (Dev), Hunter Neilson (SC), Darrell Clink (Sturgeon Creek Alternative Program in Stratton), Garreth Dunn (Emo), Madison Brown (RR) and Seth Lauzon (Bwk).
Age 12-13
1st-Scott Stewart (MC)
2nd-Reagan Calder (MC)
3rd- Kenton Peters (Strat), Kendall Stamler (Strat) and Jeffrey Dyck (Strat).
Also qualifying for provincials in this age group were Destinee Perreault (MC), Dana Allen (MC) and Nicolas Dennis (MC).
Age 14-15
1st-Lucas Koomans (Strat)
2nd-Teddy Frazer Duck (Strat)
3rd-Jonathan Clink (Strat)
Also qualifying for provincials in this age group was Alyssa Windego (MC).
