They checkmated the competition extremely well over the weekend at the Provincial Chess Championships this past weekend in Thunder Bay.
All nine of the students that attended from Riverview Elementry School in Rainy River ended up qualifying for the National Chess Championships.
Bringing home the top hardware was Lemuel Carradice who was the top player in the age 8 and 9 group. He received the Gold Cup plus $300 cash and free entry into next year's regional qualifiers. This is his second year in a row winning the Gold Cup in his age group!
In Age 7 and under, Naomi Carradice received the silver medal for the girl's section.
In Age 10 and 11 girls Moriah Carradice won the gold medal while Bethany Sinninghe and Madison Brown tied for the Bronze medal.
To qualify for Nationals they had to obtain a minimum of 2.5 pts. out of 5. Also qualifying from Riverview were Gethon Wood, Madison Brown, DJ Trenchard, Rebekah Fraser and Darrell Jonassen.
Another player of note was former Riverview/RRHS student Marty Johnston, who competed in the adult open class and won $100 for third place.
The Nationals are in Windsor, Ontario next July and the Carradice family has committed to attending already.
There was no word as to whether other qualifiers will be attending.
