Curling club hopes to build on last year's momentunm as it starts season

Unlike last year at this time, the future of the Rainy River Curling Club (RRCC) looks bright.
With rising operating costs and declining memberships last year, the club looked like it might fold early on. However, after a public meeting and a registration party, the club became reinvigorated when many people signed up to curl; including many who had not done so for a number of years and some new ones as well.
Newly elected President of the RRCC, Wes Blight, said that he is optimistic that the enthusiasm generated last year will continue this year. “We have a good executive and many volunteers already helping us get started,” said Blight on Monday.
The ice making process is well underway and Blight said that curling will likely start the second week of November. “We are planning a registration party, probably next week,” said Blight. Dues for this year’s season will be $170 but new or former curlers (those who have not curled for more than five years) will get a break. “It will only be $100 for the season (for them)!” said Blight.
Last year it was said that the club needs between 80-90 adult curlers to keep the club viable. They ended up with about that and they are hopeful that they will surpass that this year. “I have already had a call from a probable U.S. customs team interested,” said Blight.
Anyone interested in joining can come to the registration party (date yet to be set) or call Blight at 807-852-3650 or Cheryl Matthew at 852-4343. So far plans are to have at least one men’s, women’s and junior curling nights per week. “Depending how many register, we may have two draws per night and possibly more nights if there are many who sign up.”
No experience is necessary. Blight himself said, “It is a social event for me. I am not even close to being a professional. It is about fun and all are welcome to come out and try it!”
The club continues to improve its infrastructure. “Last year a new energy efficient furnace was installed. Recently we (volunteers) boxed in all the duct work and now we are painting them. Volunteers are always needed and appreciated,” said Blight.
Joining him on the executive this year is Bill Langner-Vice Pres., Donna Ivall-Treas., Sheri McQuaker-Sec., Directors are Steve Beyak, Ralph Armstrong, Murray Aikenhead, Deb Armstrong, Cheryl Matthew, Shannon Nordin, Ken Vogan and Janet Wolanicki. Ice maker this year is Tim Nordin.
Bonspiels planned for the year are Boxing Day (Dec. 26th), Women’s (Jan.), Men’s (Feb.) and Open (Mar.).
People who are unable to curl full time can also register as a spare; someone who is on a call list to sub when needed.
