Pipers and drummers stir up historic feelings
I must have some Scottish blood in me.
I just could not help but get pumped up when the Rainy Lake Highlanders started playing their bagpipes and drums Saturday at the parade and later at the legion.
I have heard pipes and drums many times over the years. Every time the same feeling comes over me. It is as if I can see a lone piper playing a battle cry over the Scottish Highlands.
The drums bring troops marching forward to battle to mind.
There is something about the power of this type of music. It is like one is transported away from reality or lifted to a new plane of vision.
So many types of music can do this in different ways, but in my opinion nothing does so more than bagpipes and drums.
It is in many ways the same feeling I get when the national anthem is played at a hockey game. It charges me up like I am one of the players getting ready to do battle. While I do not participate in the actual playing, I find myself actively cheering at major sporting events, riding the adrenaline that comes from that national anthem.
The pipers treated everyone to a rousing performance, both stationary in the front of the legion and marching throughout it. Jim Avis one of the drummers said that his group plays for enjoyment and really were not planning to play at public venues like they did on Saturday. But they really enjoy playing for crowds and did so with great intensity.
They had fun, I had a great historical feeling that I am sure many others did that day too.
Thanks Highlanders and keep on piping and drumming!
–Until then,
Ken
