Local students raise more than $700 for Haiti
In the wake of the disaster in Haiti, the students of Riverview School have been working on doing their part in helping the people of Haiti.
The grade 7 and 8 students at Riverview started organizing different school fund raising events this past week hoping to collect some money to help the people of Haiti after their 7.0 earthquake caused so much devastation throughout their country.
The Help-Haiti committee came up with five different events and started immediately on the Tuesday, Jan 19th with a class movie. Each student who contributed $2.00 could be part of the movie that was shown mostly through the breaks that day. The rest of the week saw the whole school getting involved.
Wednesday was Hat Day, Thursday was Popcorn/Juice Day, Friday was Electronic Music Day, and Friday night saw the gr. 5-8 students having a Help Haiti Dance.
Students were also encouraged to bring in spare change if they had it as donations towards the cause. Junior kindergarten to grade 8 students showed they can make a difference. Over the week, over $700.00 was raised and donations are still coming in!
The school has been receiving phone calls from people around the area who have heard about the fundraising the students have been doing and would also like to contribute to the cause.
Several local residents have already made contributions to the fundraiser. Anyone interested in making a donation is welcome to visit the school and make their donation. Monies will be tallied at the end of this week (Jan. 29th) before it is sent off to a charity organization. The Help-Haiti Committee would like to express gratitude to all those students, parents, and local residents who have helped them make a difference.
