Bad weather forces Red Hatters to have twice as much fun in February!
By Susan Douglas
RR Red Hat Society
Due to poor January weather, the Les Rouge Rouges, local chapter of the Red Hat Society, held two rendezvous in February.
Our “Keep On Smilin’” party was held appropriately at the Smiling Moon in Baudette, on Feb. 9th, 2010. Planning hostesses were Queen La Diva, (Susan Douglas) and Lady Linda of Lah Di Dah, (Linda Budreau). At each place setting were smiling paper clips holding smiling thoughts to read aloud, and take home as party favours.
Countess Shutterbug, (Lou Ricci), gave the blessing before the ladies dined on chicken pot pies, homemade rolls, salad and bread pudding with ice cream for dessert. The red hatters then tuned their kazoos for a rendition of Happy Birthday in honour of Lou Ricci. Each lady brought something to share in making the other girls smile; such as a joke, picture, etc. and they took turns around the tables.
The ladies played a game in which they had to name songs with the word smile in the title. Led by Lady Carolina Rose, (Carolyn Kreger), the Rogues performed two action songs, “If Your Happy and You Know It”, and “Skinna Ma Rinky”. The door prize, a lovely yellow glass bowl filled with smiling face candles was won by Baroness Von Schaaf, (Janet Schaaf). Many more draws were made with each gal taking home a prize with a smiley face item included. We all left with our spirits lifted, in spite of the winter cold.
On Tues. Feb. 23rd, 2010, our girls dressed in their finest regalia for “An Evening At the Oscars”. Debbie Armstrong coordinated the wonderful decorations of cut out paper red Oscars and stars suspended from the ceiling in the lower level of the Knox United Church. A “Welcome to the Oscars” sign greeted the ladies at the door. Lady Round To It, (Elsie Gerula) and Duchess of Wilson Creek, (Bev Langner), rolled out the red carpet, literally, for the ladies. A hanging red jewel was set at each place setting as a take home favour. After indulging in a delicious turkey dinner served by Deb sporting black pants, tie and white shirt the ladies finished the meal with dessert (aptly prepared by Anne Mallioux). One by one the gals were directed to dance the red carpet to music. The other ladies marked a ballet which was tallied by the UCW kitchen girls. Thanks to Irene Hanson, Anne and Debbie. Winners of the events took home lovely red purses filled with oodles of goodies.
Queen La Diva then distributed an Oscar quiz. To our readers, ‘see how many new words you can make out of the word, Precious.’ Our winner, Lady Glitter, (Brigitte McGreevy). discovered 25 of the 35 words The door prize of a gorgeous red heart shawl and necklace were also won by Brigitte. Photos were taken to end off this extremely fun event.
