Carl Robert Westberg, 50

We are saddened to announce that Carl Robert Westberg passed away at his residence in Bergland, Ontario on February 25th, 2004 at the age of 50 years.
He was born in Rainy River on August 13th, 1953 to John and Asta Westberg.
In his early years, the family lived in a logging camp in the Dogtooth Lake area. He and his brother John took school by correspondence courses. In 1961, the family moved to Bergland where Bob attended public school and later graduated from high school in Rainy River. He started guiding on Lake of the Woods as a teenager at Moen’s New Moon Landing and later at Grassy Narrows Camp for over 20 years.
The great outdoors was his life’s passion ...fishing - hunting - trapping were his favourite occupations. He made many friends in Canada and the U.S. and loved to tell stories around the shore lunches of his guiding exploits; of the trophy fish, moose and deer. A small fish was just as important as a big one!
He was hard-working, honest, good-natured and fun-loving - great at playing tricks on the cooks and waitresses at camp - hiding shoes and then disappearing, laughing to himself. He could tame birds, ducks, squirrels, chipmunks and deer to eat from his hand. He had a great respect for all things living - to appreciate them and use them but not so as to destroy nature.
Bob spent 11 years in Wisconsin, USA working in a meat plant and a small factory. Suffering from serious health problems - complications of diabetes and arthritis - he moved home to Bergland in August 2002. He was able to spend time on his beloved Lake of the Woods and on Whitefish Bay fishing with friends for trout and walleye and just enjoying the peace and tranquility of the water.
Memorial services were held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Bergland on March 3, 2004 with Pastor Brian Keffer officiating. Organ music was played by Laurie Pentney. Fred Brett sang a special song “You Have Come Down to the Lakeshore” with Lenard Larson on guitar. Niece Sami Luoma read “Memories of Uncle Bob.”
He leaves his mother, Asta of Bergland; 2 brothers - John of Sioux Narrows and Richard and Cindy of Morson; 1 sister - Joy and Tim Luoma, 2 nieces Christina Everson and Sami Luoma and 1 grand-nephew, Dylan John Woolsey all of Fort Frances, Ont; 1 uncle - Oswald Trapness of Bergland; 1 aunt Arlene Campbell of Saskatchewan, and numerous cousins.
He was predeceased by his father, John in 1990. He will rest in Bergland Cemetery by the Little Grassy River.
We will miss you and always love you and we know that you are Home safely at the Harbour.
Memorial gifts are appreciated to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
