Eighteen enthusiastic quilters braved the rain, snow, and less than perfect driving conditions to attend the Ladyslipper Quilters guild meeting on Monday evening, March 1, at the Brink Center in Baudette.
Sandy Peterson chaired the brief business meeting. A copy of the proposed “Bylaws and Policies” was distributed and will be voted on at the April meeting. Members were also reminded that more blocks are needed for the quilt to be raffled this summer.
The program committee reported that 12 members had attended the hand applique class taught by Mary Graves of International Falls on February 21. Several members showed their completed appliqued blocks.
A quilting workday is scheduled for Saturday, March 20, at the Brink Center. Starting at 9:00 am - 3:00 pm members and non-members can work on their unfinished projects without interruption. March 20 is also National Quilting Day and the first day of spring so it will be a good time to finish those winter quilting project.
At the meeting on April 5 those members who participated in the ‘brown bag exchange’ last fall are to show the quilted item sewn from the six fat quarters of fabric they received in the brown bag. The finished project will be given to the person whose fabrics were in the bag.
Aldyne Fuller demonstrated how to assemble April’s block of the month “SeeSaw”. It, too, follows the ‘star’ design theme chosen for 2004. Several members showed the March block “Next Door Neighbor”.
Audrey Olson showed a quilt sewn from the “True Lover’s Knot” pattern and showcasing 18 different fabrics in burgundy, pink and green colors.
Anyone who quilts or sews knows there are always scraps left-over and no scrap is too small. What to do with the scraps was the focus of the lesson given by Aldyne Fuller. She showed many quilts and quilt blocks made from scraps including a family heirloom quilt sewn from any cloth scrap available at the time. Scrap quilting can be a fun and creative way to sew a quilt and if one needs a special color or fabric just check with another quilter and swap some scraps.
The door prize was won by Ruth Lee.
At the next meeting on April 5, Kris Berthiaume from Jeri’s Shop will show how to transfer pictures to cloth which can be sewn into a quilt. It’s a great way to showcase family pictures and events. Anyone interested in this topic or quilting in general is welcome to attend.
