Final flood cash flows out
News Release
Min. of Municipal Affairs
Seven northwestern Ontario communities will receive final relief payments under the Ontario Disaster Relief Assistance Program (ODRAP) to cover costs of repairing critical infrastructure damaged during a severe storm in June 2002, Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister John Gerretsen announced.
“The 2002 storm was one of the most severe storms ever experienced in Ontario,” said Gerretsen. “The repair of critical infrastructure damaged in the 2002 floods ensures these communities fully recover and continue to grow safe and strong.”
A number of communities in northwestern Ontario experienced severe flooding on June 9, 10 and 11, 2002 as a result of the storm causing extensive damage to private property and local infrastructure.
These payments to the seven communities total over $810,000. Thirteen eligible municipalities in the region will have received over $4 million in disaster assistance from the province, including the latest payments.
The following communities received final payments: Atikokan, $326,879.02; Chapple, $70,015.48; Fort Frances,$112,463.45; Ignace, $56,158.41; Machin, $13,401.35; Morley, $35,706.33 and Rainy River $195,623.56.
As part of the provincial commitment to help northwestern Ontario communities affected by the June 2002 storm, the Province undertook to reimburse up to 100 per cent of eligible municipal costs incurred as a result of storm damage.
The Ontario Disaster Relief Assistance Program (ODRAP) provides financial assistance to municipalities that sustain public damages as a result of a natural disaster. Municipalities in a designated disaster area can apply for funding of up to 100 per cent to cover eligible public costs associated with disaster relief and rebuilding damaged infrastructure.
