RRHS students raise over $4,000 for famine relief

Laura Armistead
RRHS Teacher

In the next 24 hours, more than 27,000 children will die because they don’t have enough food, safe water or medicine. Rainy River High School “refused to do nothing” and enthusiastically raised money for needy children by participating in the 30 Hour Famine Friday, April 2-Saturday, April 3. The High School had over 60 students participate and raised $4030.66 to help feed and provide clean water for children in need.
The top fundraisers were Nathan Sawatzky, who raised over $200, Teila Michl, Anders Moen, Krista Wood and Dayna Seguin. These students were recognized at the Famine and will receive prizes from World Vision. Students went without food for 30 hours and then were treated to a french toast breakfast before they left for home. The Famine was organized by Ms. Armistead and Mr. Murphy’s combined Civics/Careers courses. The course encourages students to contribute to their community and to demonstrate leadership. The Grade 10 students organized the activities, tracked the donations, collected prizes and educated the student body about the programs supported by the Famine.
The school wishes to express its gratitude to all the members of the community who supported this effort.
