It was a night of pomp and circumstance for 34 graduates at Rainy River High School last Wednesday when they celebrated a milestone in front of a packed house.
After the staff and graduates marched into the gymnasium Principal Jim Chorney offered some opening remarks. “This is a celebration not only for the grads but teachers, parents and anyone who had a hand in getting them here tonight.”
He encouraged them to make decisions thoughtfully and noted that often it is like ordering lunch from fast food restaurants. “There are no guarantees of what you are getting. Some decisions will be hard and others easy.”
Chorney also joked with them noting that, “In the future when you are told to hit the books they do not mean Facebook!”
Chorney also told them not to be afraid to be an idea person. “I believe BP is looking for some of them right now!”
In closing Chorney quoted President Bush saying, “It is not the pollution causing greenhouse gases. It is the impurities in the air and water.” Chorney added, “This is proof if you follow your dreams anyone can be President!”
School Council President Gaylene Jasper then took the podium noting that graduation is a time when people turn a page in their lives. “This is an exciting new chapter in your life. It is a new blank page. Dream big and believe in yourself. It is up to you to decide where your life will take you!”
Rainy River Mayor Deb Ewald encouraged the grads to remember their years at RRHS and thanked them for their years of volunteering as students. “You have helped make this a better place to live!”
Following presentation of awards, scholarships and diplomas Valedictorian Alyssa Jodoin addressed her class and the audience. She compared their four years at RRHS to a roller coaster ride with many ups and downs. “I still can’t imagine not coming back here next year and seeing everyone.”
She spoke of many great memories in sports, drama, school trips, etc. “Now we begin new adventures with a good foundation!”
Jodoin’s mom was also recognized as an outstanding parent volunteer at the school. Principal Chorney presented Lisa Jodoin with a bouquet of flowers.
