RRHS students encounter Canadian science on trip to Ottawa

Jay Neilson

On the fourth of April, Kyle Kuzyk and I went to Encounters with Canada in Ottawa for a one week trip focusing on Science and Technology. We joined over 100 youth between the ages of 15 & 17 from across Canada at the Terry Fox Centre.
The first few days focused on Canadian Government and social issues including bilingualism and racism. We took a trip to Parliament Hill where we visited the Senate and the House of Commons.
The rest of the week centered mainly on science and technology. Several speakers presented on a variety of topics at the Centre. These included an engineer from the Canadian Space Agency, a reptile and amphibian expert and a physicist who gave a demonstration on cryogenic freezing.
We also had the opportunity to visit one of the following: the Canadian Aviation Museum, Carlton University, or the National Wildflower Museum. A cultural experience gave us the choice of seeing the Museum of Civilization, a Comedy or an orchestra at the Canadian Arts Centre.
For me, the highlights of the trip were meeting new people, the visit to the Canadian Museum of Science and Technology, and the tour of Carlton University. However, all the events were great and I enjoyed the entire week.
During the week, I met many new people and learned a lot about the diversity of Canada. I had a great time and, on the behalf of myself and Kyle, thank the Student Council of Rainy River High School for financial support and the Rainy River High School for giving me the opportunity to go.
