Call MNR if you catch a tagged walleye

News Release
MNR

Between 100 and 150 walleye per day were tagged by Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) Dryden District staff over a five-day period in the Dryden area. Eight MNR staff and two Dryden High School co-op students tagged the fish on Wabigoon/Dinorwic Lake, Wabigoon River and Whitefish Rapids from April 26th to 30th. Thirty-eight percent of the fish captured were over 50 cm and the largest one was 14 pounds.
The purpose of the study is to collect information on the movement and distribution patterns of walleye following spawning through tag information provided by anglers.
Walleye were captured using trapnets which hold fish until tags can be attached to them. Data was collected on sex, spawning condition, length, weight and colouration of the fish. The water temperature and the weather was also noted. As well, the second and third dorsal spines were removed for sectioning and aging. The walleye were then released to resume their spawning activities.

Anglers who catch a tagged walleye are asked to call Rick Vincent, Area Technician, at the MNR Dryden District office at (807) 223-7514 with the following information: the date of catch, the location of the catch and the tag number.
