RRHS honours its best

“You should try to achieve a balance between sports and academics,” said RRHS Awards Banquet Master of Ceremonies Jeff Rajala last Thursday.
He encouraged students who excel in academics to try and fit athletics into their lives. Citing his regrets that he did not participate in sports until his last year in high school, Rajala said, “It was the best time of my life and so rewarding.”

Town taxes will not rise this year

With a bare bones quorum Monday Rainy River town council passed the 2005 tax ratios.
Finance Committee Chairman Brent Anderson said, “I am pleased to announce that there will be no tax increases this year.” Anderson said the town’s finances are in a good position and that his committee did not feel there was a need to raise taxes this year.

Rainy pounds Pinewood 9-0

The crowd was reflective of how popular the rivalry has become between the Pinewood Bears and RR Legion fastball teams.
Both teams have players from Rainy River on them and have become staunch rivals in the past couple of years. The stands were full and many people were standing watching the game last Tuesday evening as RR played host.

Beautiful music played on the accordion

On June 1st, 2005 sixteen seniors met at the depot for fun and fellowship.
Wilfred Johnson with his accordion and mouth organ played all our favourite oldies, which we thoroughly enjoyed. He spoke of a piece we seldom hear anymore and played “The Maple Leaf Forever”, why do we not hear this I wonder? It’s beautiful.

Two brilliant Warblers

Most of the warblers, of which there are a lot around here, are usually dressed up in shades of green or yellow, with a bit of black or brown thrown in sometimes.
But there are two which have become quite different from the run-of-the-mill, being decked out in black, white and bright orange.

Three local boys cleaned up at the Normax Thunder Bay Chess tournament over the weekend.
Marty Johnston of Rainy River went undefeated to win the 16-17 age group and bring home $125 in prize money.

Cadets get once over

This Monday marked the 61st anniversary of D-Day, so perhaps it was appropriate that a World War II veteran be the guest reviewing officer at the annual ceremonial review of 144 Royal Canadian Sea Cadets Corps (Fort Frances) on Saturday.

Cross cultural experience

It was probably the most unique Native Awareness Day Rainy River High School students ever had.
On Thursday a bus load of RRHS students travelled to Pegamigaabo Elementary School at Big Grassy First Nation. In the past elders and other members of the area First Nations came to RRHS to teach the students about Native culture.
