An update on a number of things

I hope everyone has had a great summer so far and that Mother Nature has a few more sunny days saved for our rapidly approaching Labour Day long weekend. The column this week will provide you with details on two items that may be interest of to you – the federal New Democrat convention which was held just over a week ago, and a riding wide survey that I am sending out in the next few weeks.

Starting a new year

I could not help but notice Saturday evening as we were fishing just north of my brothers cabin, that the sun is now setting by 8:30 in the evening. We had thought that we could get a full hour and half on the hump, but had to head back to the cabin after an hour fishing.
Fall is coming. The days are definitely getting shorter.

Times are a changing at newspapers

Daily newspapers across North America are facing difficult times. Since 2006, the percentage of people reading a daily paper has declined by 4%. Community newspapers such as the Fort Frances Times and the Rainy River Record have successfully held on to their readers.
One of the major changes in daily newspaper readers is that the number of readers, choosing to read their paper on line has grown by almost 50%. Now one third of newspapers daily readers are reading the paper on line. It is a troubling problem for newspaper owners.
