In all fresh water, there is no other fish like it. Big, streamlined. Camouflaged, the Muskie has a devilish grin and a wicked set of teeth.

If there were any question about which federal party stands behind the people of Northwestern Ontario, then Michael Ignatieff removed all doubt this week when he declared that his federal Liberals would honour the Flaherty-McGuinty HST tax grab if he were to become Prime Minister. With that declaration the New Democratic Party now stands alone as the only federal party which understands that families in our region can’t afford an 8 percent sales tax increase, and which remains steadfastly committed to stopping the HST from being implemented next July.

Summer turned to fall suddenly overnight on Saturday in Fort Frances and the district. I went for the last long swim of the year Saturday afternoon. It is the latest I have ever swam in September in Rainy Lake. In fact the water was warmer Saturday than it had been during the months of June, July and early August.
The dock at the end of Fifth Street late Friday afternoon was filled with kids getting in their last lake swims of the year. It was crowded, much the same way the Pither’s Point Park dock used to be crowded when swimming lessons were offered at the Point.

I hope this column finds you and your family well. My first week back on the Hill was very busy so let me use this space to discuss my views on the possibility of a fall election, and a new last minute proposal from the government to help some Employment Insurance recipients.
In the days leading up to the new session of parliament, you probably noticed that media coverage was dominated by a single question: would there be a third federal election in three years or not? I am happy to report that the answer to that question for the time being is ‘no.’

A friend of swimming in the Northwest region was recognized in Toronto at the annual Swimming Hall of Fame banquet. Jim Brow was recognized in the Golden Roll of Honour along with five other Master Swimming Officials for their contribution to the sport.
For over 30 years Jim has volunteered to the Fort Frances Aquanauts and clubs from Kenora to Marathon and from Fort Frances to Red Lake. As a volunteer Jim has worked at meets within the region, provincial championships, national championships and internationally at the Pan Am Games.
