Signs of another recession are here

It may be summer and a bit slower than usual in the Capital, but that did not stop it from being an interesting week. Bad economic news weighed heavy and kept people on our side of the fence busy trying to assess the damage and where things are heading.
The bad news came quickly and in bunches. Bond yields surged in Europe, the US was on the verge on defaulting on some its credit obligations, and economic and job growth stalled in Canada – yes our Canada. Each problem is unique in and of itself, but together they should be cause for concern to Finance Minister Jim Flaherty.

Comparing then and now

I happened to be looking back on a column my father wrote in the early 1990’s. In it he was explaining how Canadians had racked up huge debts that were going unpaid for. The IMF at that point had told the Canadian government that Canada had to get its finances in order.

No t.v. but plenty of computers

We have had a rule at the cabin that we will not have a television to entertain our family or friends who visit. Since the cabin was built in 1967 there have only been two occasions where a portable television made an appearance. One was the 1972 Canada Russia Hockey show down. The other I can’t remember.
We relied on listening to CBC in the morning and had the weather radio tuned to announce any impending weather.
A telephone has been in the cabin for almost four decades.
