We owe labour unions a great deal

Lately labour and trade unions have been portrayed in a negative light by conservative media and business interests. Doing so may serve the interests of those casting the stones but the reality is that we owe unions our thanks for improving the economic and social well-being of working Canadians over the decades that they have been in existence.

Would privatizaton be a good thing?

Killing the goose that laid the “Golden Egg” is among the most famous of Aesop’s Fairy tales. It is the story of a cottager and wife who had a goose that every day laid a golden egg. The couple believed that the goose contained a huge lump of gold and they killed the goose to grab the gold, only to find out that the goose was totally common. In killing the goose they lost their wealth generator and were deprived of all the good things that the goose could provide for them in the future.

Did you ever wonder what you did before you had cell phones? Have you wondered how you could possibly have lived without a smart phone? Some of you reading this column will quickly think, “I don’t have a smart phone, let alone a cell phone” and so there is no wonderment in the first two questions.
And they have another question, “Why do I need a cell phone?”
