Is Canada suffering from Dutch Disease?

New Democrats have never been shy about taking on difficult issues. It would often be easier to deny that there was a problem and just carry on as is it didn’t exist, but we don’t. Thus, given recent economic developments in our riding, region, and country though I think it’s time we talked about what is known in economic circles as the ‘Dutch Disease’ and how it is affecting our standard of living.

Watching swimmers excel

For almost two decades, I have spent the Memorial Day weekend at the Canada Games Complex in Thunder Bay officiating at the Thunder Bolts swim meet. This particular swim meet attracts swimmers from Minnesota, North Dakota, and Manitoba and across Northwestern Ontario.
For Northwest region swimmers, it is their only meet where they compete in a 50 metre pool. The racing and strategy is much different that in the shorter 25m pool.

Working hard on First Nations issues

In addition to working hard to bring some transparency and accountability to the Harper Government over their massive 400-plus page budget bill that is being rammed quickly through parliament I also spent time working on several issues related to First Nations communities in Canada this past week.

The lake came alive

The lake came alive this Victoria Day weekend. Since our first weekend at the cabin, almost five weeks ago, hardly a light has been seen at night on the lake. This weekend several lights lit the windows of cabins that we can see.
