2006 was a challenging year for farmers

The new year is almost here once again. For producers, 2006 was another challenging year. The problem is the challenges keep changing. 2004 was one of the coolest years on record and 2005 was one of the wettest years on record. 2006 started out looking pretty promising in the spring. Then we started to become a little on the dry side - but nobody wanted to complain in case it turned out to be another year like 2005.

The Marsh Hawk - Our only harrier

The Marsh Hawk is different from almost all other hawks in many ways. It hunts low to the ground, the male and female are of different colours, it makes its nest on the ground, and it lays more eggs than other hawks.

Well the much anticipated high point of our Biggest Loser contest was reached on Dec. 5th in Rainy River and Dec. 6th in Bergland.
Those in the top ten positions, but especially the ones jockeying for the coveted first, second & third places were anxiously waiting for the last person to be weighed so the winners could be declared.

Jr. Boys hoopsters win first game of the season

This week at Rainy River High School, the sports committee held a pep-rally for the beginning of the boy’s basketball and girl’s volleyball season.
The pep-rally was also held for boys and girl’s curling and hockey. Several parents attended and Kristine Brown won the attendance prize of a scarf of her choice. Congratulations Kristine!

Many gardeners and homeowners are familiar with the species of trees known as both poplar and aspen. The Rainy River District is home to four native species of poplar and aspen. The eastern cottonwood, the large-tooth aspen, the balsam poplar (some call it black poplar or bam) and the trembling (quaking) aspen.

The Wolverine is the shadow of the woods

There are probably more stories about the Wolverine than any other mammal in America. It is supposed to have amazing strength, be extremely intelligent, and have a very ugly disposition. Whether these stories are all true or not, no one really knows. The Wolverine is the shadow in the deep woods, the tracks in the morning, the ransacked trapper’s cabin.

New owners take over Road Runner Motel

There are some new faces around the Roadrunner Motel in Rainy River.
Rob Cooper and Audrey Smith recently purchased the motel from Dave and Tammy Armstrong.

Little St. rail crossing to close

Rainy River’s newly elected town council voted unanimously Monday evening to close the Little St. railway crossing.
After months of the issue being dealt with by the previous council, the decision was tabled by them to be dealt with by the new council; Mayor Deb Ewald, and councillors Gerry Marchuk, Gord Armstrong, Marilyn McAlister and Brent Anderson.
