The Rainy River High School Co-op students hosted a Supervisor Appreciation Day on Tuesday, January 16th. Nearly 35 supervisors, Co-op students and guests participated in the luncheon. The Co-op students assembled Display Boards outlining areas of learned skills and personal interests at their job sites. Several other students visiting from our feeder schools were also given the opportunity to view the boards and ask questions about the Co-op program.

RRCA Research Committee member Amos Brielmann told area cattlemen that there is an almost 100% infestation rate of liver fluke among Rainy River District cattle.
Last fall he received a call from a meat inspector in Southern Ontario asking him about his liver fluke problem on the farm. Brielmann was surprised to hear that it was severe as it was. “He said he had never seen a problem like that before.”

The Stratton Sales barn is in need of some upgrades.
That was the word from Barn Modification Committee member Aarne Hahkala at the annual meeting of the Rainy River Cattlemen’s Association (RRCA) last Wednesday evening in Stratton.

It was Anne Gillie’s last home game as a Low/RR/Indus Bear and for a while it looked like the girls were going to pull off a picture perfect finish to her career.
After the first period it was 3-0 for Kenora.

Licensed day care services in Rainy River has been a dream for the community for some time now.
Recently the Learn, Laugh and Play Children’s Centre opened in the community, temporarily operating out of the Evangelical Covenant Church. Eventually they hope to move into Riverview Elementary School but not until extensive renovations are completed there.

He has participated in the Rainy River Walleye Tournament (RRWT) since day one but now is left feeling like he has been punched in the gut. Lorne Jonassen received word last week that he was kicked out of the RRWT for a period of one year.

In November the team made an application to the Wayne Gretzky Foundation/Canadian Hockey Foundation Launch The “Future Team Canada” Program. Not thinking they would ever hear from them again they were ecstatic when they did.

The last time the LoW/RR/Indus Girls High School Hockey team faced Fort Frances it was a nail biter and nothing changed on Thursday when Fort Frances visited Rainy River to play them again.

Eleven members came to our regular January meeting, and it was really good to see you all. We opened with our auxiliary prayer, followed with the reading of the last minutes and financial statements.

The first week back to school was a busy one at the high school with several home games being played. The Owl’s court sports played the Ignace Falcons on Tuesday and the Sioux Lookout Warriors on Wednesday. The Junior and Senior Girls and the Junior boys beat the Falcons, while the rest of the games where hard fought against incredibly skilled teams.
