When we examine the critical issues we face we can list them by individual industry and can identify the gaps and how to solve them. However the most demoralizing symptom we face is depopulation or out-migration.

Measuring pasture yields can be a challenge. The following article by Jack Kyle, Grazier Specialist with OMAFRA. Gives you an idea of how to do it.
With harvested forage or grain crops we get an indication of yield from the number of bales, feet in the silo or bushels of grain produced. With pasture we can measure the number of pounds of beef or lamb produced, but in many cases it is breeding females that are being pastured, so although we get an idea of the pounds of calf produced it is not a very accurate estimation of the actual pasture yields.

Council downsizes from 7 to 5

Rainy River town council voted 5-2 Monday evening to downsize local government.
After giving notice and holding a public meeting to gather input on the issue, council read a bylaw Monday, to enact the downsizing, the final two times and then passed a motion with only councillors Deb Ewald and Gerry Marchuk voting against it.

The Rainy River and District Chamber of Commerce worked on its annual Christmas celebrations at a meeting last week.

Friesen finishes in the top half at state meet

Rainy River had only one runner at the state cross country meet Nov. 5, but sophomore Andrew Friesen once again finished in the top half of the field. He placed 58th of 154 runners and improved on his 2004 state meet time by 13 seconds, finishing the 5000-meter course in 17:22.

At the next Morson Women’s Institute meeting, l2:30 p.m. Nov. l7th, at the Morson Hall, three tickets for W.I. quilts will be drawn. One for the queen-size quilt, one for the lap quilt, and one for the crib-size quilt.
