If you thought the delays on the bridge have been bad the last three Saturdays, get ready for delays every day.
The Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) will be erecting traffic lights on the international bridge between Rainy River and Baudette within the next week or so.
Crews were on the bridge last week removing angle support brackets from the bridge so that taller vehicles will be able to cross when the bridge goes single lane in the next two weeks.

The Lake of the Woods (Bergland) Women’s Institute met at the home of Marjorie Meek on May 11th with seven members present. It is nice to have Marjorie back after her winter trip. It was also great to see Margaret recovering so well from her surgery. Our thoughts were with member Ellen on the tragic loss of her brother in law, Tom Ronning. Our condolences go out to Audrey and family.

Ont. Forestry Industry
In just three years Ontario’s forest industries have experienced a dramatic loss of competitive advantage. The industry “is in the unenviable position of operating in one of the highest cost jurisdictions in the world,” and the Government of Ontario has been repeatedly urged to take the necessary steps to return Ontario to a positive business climate. Today’s announcement by the Minister of Natural Resources does not address the competitive disadvantages facing an industry that is on the cusp of utter collapse in this province.

Most cowherds are out on pasture now or will be shortly. What is happening out there and how are they doing? It is a good idea to check regularly, especially in light of the constant rains and saturated conditions that we have had in the past couple of weeks.

“How much wood could a woodchuck chuck
If a woodchuck could chuck wood?”
That old children’s saying may be sort of cute, but it has no real relationship to the animal itself. Woodchucks have nothing at all to do with wood. It is really a marmot. There are other marmots in Canada, but they live in the far west.

Gardening Guru
You can be a gardener even if you do not have a garden as I have talked about container gardening in the past. Almost any plant can be grown in a container, but most people do not realize that vegetables can be grown in containers instead of a garden in the ground. Almost every vegetable can be grown in a container with about the only exception being corn. There are a variety of containers available on the market today so you can choose one suited specifically to the vegetables you want to grow.

Who would have ever thought that an art class would lead to many of it students and the teacher getting published in a book?
Well that is exactly what happened over the past five years. Agnes Grover, the Native Counsellor at Rainy River High School approached the art teacher of the day, Keith Aely, to see if some of his students were interested in attending a workshop at Voyageurs National Park in International Falls, MN.
