Chess kids do well at regionals

While dissapointed that none of them are moving on to the National Chess Championships, Norma-Jean Johnston said that all the kids who recently attended the regionals, in Thunder Bay October 13th, did extremely well.

While there have been no confirmed cases of anthrax attacks in Canada, Canada Post has indicated that its personnel are being extremely vigilant in watching for suspicious mail. They have also said that the public can help by watching for similar items arriving in their mail boxes.

Snowmobilers face trail permit hikes as insurance costs soar

The cost of trail liability insurance has soared by 700%, but permit prices will increase by only about 8%. That’s the good news from the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs for snowmobilers who have been on tender hooks since September when the possibility of a $30 increase rocked the industry. The fee for 2002 seasonal trail permits is now expected to increase by only $10, to $130 if purchased on or before December 1, 2001 and $160 thereafter. One Day and Seven day Permits , remain at $30 and $90 respectively.

Health travel grants doubled

Reimbursements to Northern Ontario residents for travel expenses will increase significantly with the introduction of enhancements to the Northern Health Travel Grant (NHTG) program, Health and Long-Term Care Minister Tony Clement and Northern Development and Mines Minister Dan Newman announced. The enhancements will be in effect on November 1.
