Dale Lowes had fun showing off his unique customized two seat snowmobile last Saturday. Heads turned as can be seen here as Peter Johnston of Winnipeg walks by while Dale was showing the motor to a group of bystanders.

Rainy River residents of First Street awoke to a surprise last Wednesday. With the frigid temperatures some times comes breaks in water lines and there was a big one on First Street's 300 block Wednesday. Water was flowing like it was spring thaw, but it was no where near warm enough to thaw. Windchill factors were in the -40s C.

Saragh, Emily and Elizabeth Fraser braved the cold and ran the Freeze Yer Gizzard Blizzard 5k run in International Falls Minnesota on Jan. 19th. For their efforts, the girls took first, second and fourth in the 19 and under category with Saragh coming in first overall in the women’s section. After they crossed the finish line, the girls were interviewed on camera by a crew from Explore Minnesota for Minnesota Public Television.

Angie Armstrong-skip, Cheryl Matthew-third, Sheri McQuaker-second and Sherri Grant, won the 'A' Event in the RR Ladies Bonspiel Saturday night with an extra end 9-8 win over Debbie Armstrong's rink.

Peter Michniewich and his passenger escaped his Nissan Pathfinder Sunday afternoon after it caught on fire at Canada Customs in Rainy River. The RR Volunteer Fire Dept. was on the scene very quickly and extinguished the fire. It is thought the cause was electrical.

Sheila Medwechuk, left, won the kids table and chairs decorated by local artist Patti Diebel. The draw was made at the Linda Johnston Alzheimer Dinner to Remember Saturday night. The other prize, an adult sized chair was won by Lisa Cyr and can be picked up at the Record office.

Constable Anne McCoy was in Rainy River on Friday to introduce herself as the new Community Services Officer for the district Ontario Provincial Police. She also was driving the district's very first
"back to the black and white" police cruiser. Eventually all the cruisers will be black and white like they used to be years ago.

While the new program will not have door to door pick up like the old one, the new recycling program is already promising to be well used by local people. As of Monday the new bins were about half full. Pick up is every Thursday. The big blue bins are located just west of the Town Garage/Fire Hall on Sixth St. in Rainy River.

On behalf of the Kenora-Rainy River Alzheimer Society, Bob Johnston of Rainy River, right, presented Rainy River Mayor Debbie Ewald with a special flag to fly in front of the town hall for the month of January as this is Alzheimer disease awareness month.
