Cattlemen get $74,000 for work at Stratton sales barn

The Rainy River Cattlemen’s Association (RRCA) received good news from the province last Wednesday. The Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation announced a $74,000 contribution to a massive renovation/upgrade project at the Stratton Sales Barn.

Fun Fly lands in town Saturday

Another attraction during RailRoad Daze in Rainy River this year, will be the Rainy River Fun Fly. Held annually, this year on Saturday, July 21 starting at 10:30 a.m., the Fun Fly is hosted by the Rainy River Radio Control Flying Club at their airfield one mile north of Rainy River on Byrnes Road.

Music Fest line up packed with local talent

Hannam Park will be alive with the sounds of music this Saturday and Sunday.
The Annual Rainy River Music Festival will be held in the park with a variety show slated for Saturday afternoon and the regular festival on Sunday afternoon.

Muggles from across the area will be under a magical spell in Rainy River this Friday night and early Saturday morning as a book launch party for the latest Harry Potter novel will be held at the old Rainy River Train station.

Giant beavers have been spotted on the Rainy River in the past few weeks. It is thought that they are searching for food and are thought to be card-a-bores instead of vegetarians.

Swim at your own risk... or better yet stay out of the Rainy River at Hannam Park and Government Dock.
Last week the Northwestern Health Unit (NWHU) posted warnings all along the waterfront warning people not to swim there. Brian Norris, Public Health Inspector, told the Record that water samples taken produced dangerous counts of bacteria; particularly ecoli.

A rash of local break-ins

Rainy River area businesses were on edge over the weekend after a rash of break and enters took place.
It all came to light Friday morning when workers arrived at the Royal Canadian Legion and discovered what looked like an attempted break in overnight. At first Legion staff and the O.P.P. thought thieves had failed to gain entrance through the newly installed patio entrance on the north side of the building.

TORONTO — The Ontario government will conduct a broad public review of Ontario’s moose
program, Natural Resources Minister David Ramsay said today.
“The review will address concerns raised by the hunting community within the greater context of the entire moose program,” said Ramsay. “We want to ensure our world-class program continues to respond to environmental changes as well as the needs of society.”
