Spruce Creek Golf Course set to open Aug. 18th

It has been three years in the making and on August 18th the sound of people yelling “Fore” will echo across Morson’s Spruce Creek Golf Course.
It started with a dream by Ken and Laurie Pentney who live just south of Morson. Running a tourist camp and commercial fishing operation for years they decided that they wanted to help develop the area’s economy in a slightly different way but complimentary to the tourist industry.

Not many businesses can say they have been around for 70 years let alone say they have been run by the same family that long.

Parents seeking youth addiction support services

It took a group of concerned parents to realize that there is a huge missing link in the addition counselling and treatment system in the Rainy River District.
Parents Against Illicit Narcotics (PAIN) formed in the past year and in February of this year pulled together experts from across the district to talk about what services are available for adults and are lacking for kids.

The air north of Rainy River at the Rainy River Internationals Radio Control Field was a buzz last Saturday with a whole gaggle of model aircraft from high performance aerobatic fixed wing, to jet propelled, to helicopters, to scale model WWII Warbirds.

Legion pulls out a big gun!Boschoff helps secure memorial howitzer

Nearly two years of efforts finally paid off for the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 54 in Rainy River Friday morning.
A C1 Howitzer, 105 mm (25 lbs. shell) General artillery gun arrived at the club. It has been decommissioned and will be permanently on display next to the cenotaph in memory of veterans who fought in wars over the past century defending freedom.

RR Open revived

After a two year hiatus the Rainy River Open Golf Tournament is making a comeback.
The 31st RR Open was held in 2004 as part of the community’s centennial. After that no one wanted to do the footwork and organize the tournament. This year Bob McGreevy and Angie Armstrong, along with several other volunteers agreed it was time for a revival.

Beach gets clearance for swimming in time for Railroad Daze

The Rainy River Record received word early Friday morning from the Northwestern Health Unit that the latest water samples at Hannam Park are good.
The beach was closed last week due to high ecoli (bacteria) counts. However, tests taken this week have shown the levels to have dropped off significantly which is great news for citizens as temperatures are expected to climb this weekend.

Quilt show July 28th

The Lake of the Woods Ladyslipper Quilters Quilt Guild is holding their biennial quilt show in Baudette on Saturday, July 28 starting at 10:00 am - 5:00 pm and on Sunday, July 29 from 1:00 - 5:00 pm. The show site is the Agriculture-Horticulture Building on the Lake of the Woods fairgrounds in Baudette. The fairgrounds is located three blocks south of Highway 11 and the Baudette Motel on Highway 1. There is no admission charge.
