RRHS Class of 2007 begins adult life

The Rainy River High School Class of 2007 took a big step to adulthood last Wednesday when 23 students graduated.
After the graduates and school staff entered the RRHS Auditorium teacher Laura Mason opened the evening’s ceremonies by singing O Canada.

School board pleased with literacy results

(June 13, 2007) - The Rainy River District School Board’s results for the 2007 Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) indicate that the district’s students continue to perform well in the areas of reading and writing. Of the 248 Grade 10 students who wrote the test for the first time in March 2007, 88% of students passed both components of the test. This rate maintains the record-high success rate achieved last year and marks an 18% increase over the past five years. As well, in comparison to the Provincial success rate of 84%, the Board’s results are 4% higher.

Common Snapping Turtle is not all that common

The Common Snapping Turtle, Chelydra Serpentine, is not all that common a site. Widely distributed across eastern North America, it is found across the Rainy River District in lakes and streams. Sometimes you can see them basking on logs or stream banks, but more often they will be laying in shallow water with only their snorkel nostrils above the surface.

New Rec. Director revives Railroad Daze

There is a new Recreation Director at the Rainy River Recreation Centre.
Travis Vandenbrand has hired on with the RR Rec. Board for the summer and has already reenergized the activities list for the season.

RRFDC champions a banner year

About 40 people from across the district attended the 25th Annual General Meeting of the Rainy River Future Development Corporation in Rainy River Thursday evening.
The nominating committee presented five names for election at the AGM. One more candidate, Gord Armstrong of Rainy River, was nominated from the floor. Three candidates, Martin Dufresne (RR), Tony Marinaro (FF) and Ken McKinnon (LaVallee) were elected to three year terms. Two candidates, Gord Armstrong (RR) and Cathe Hoszowski (FF) were elected to one year terms. Jan Beazley (FF) was nominated but did not get elected.
