Principal up for the challenge: Building a positive future at local schools

The Rainy River District School Board recently announced changes to previous plans for the administration at Rainy River area schools. Ian Simpson who was previously announced as the principal at Riverview elementary school for the coming year has instead, accepted a position in Thunder Bay. Kendall Olsen former Riverview Principal is moving to the Sturgeon Creek School as Principal. At Donald Young School in Emo Leslie Barr-Kellar will assume duties as Vice-Principal

Fraser attends special training camp

News Release

Local athlete Saragh Fraser attended an elite training program with Olympian Carrie Tollefson. Tollefson, a 2004 women’s 1500 metre competitor, is currently training for the 2008 Olympics in Bejing. Fraser was accepted to the training camp and spent the week at the St. Paul, Minnesota campus of St Catherine’s College. In addition to 8 mile training runs, the participants were given instruction in technique, strategy and nutrition by Olympic coaches, physicians and athletes.

Police to give out tickets to kids who obey the law

Kids beware... you could get a ticket from the police... that is if you are obeying the law!
For the second year policemen across the district are armed with a bunch of tickets to give out to kids 16 and under for wearing their bike helmets.

Cardboard Duct Tape Boat races just around the corner

The 5th Annual Great Beaver Cardboard and Duct Tape Races will be held July 22 during RailRoad Daze in Rainy River. This popular family event promoting Safety and Fun on our Waterways is sponsored by the Rainy River Recreation Board. Corporate sponsors are Fort Frances General Supply, 3M Canada Ltd and Norampac Open to everyone in the world, participants get the chance to win a cheap, but stunning trophy in one of several classes. These include open, youth, family, and adult.

Locals helping third world countries

How do you insure the dollars you donate to foreign aid make it to the desperately needy. Is it wasted on fund raising and bureaucracy or skimmed off by a myriad of fingers along the way before it makes it to that struggling soul staring at you from the TV commercial.

Cell service improved in RR

If you are a cell phone user in Rainy River you may have noticed that your phone suddenly started working much better, especially in buildings.
A spokesperson for Norwest Mobility told the Record Monday that they have upgraded the tower to 800 megahertz. That gives better signal strength and hence better building penetration. Norwest Mobility also did the same upgrade in Fort Frances about a month ago.

Fireworks postponed to RR Daze

Well there was no parade in Rainy River Canada Day, but it did rain on the only scheduled activity here; the fireworks.
The Rainy River Volunteer Fire Dept. had all the launchers set up and ready to fire off another great fireworks display marking Canada’s 140th birthday. But Mother Nature had other plans for the community.

Missionaries do the Lord’s work in Rainy River

A big piece of Mark Mast’s hometown came to Rainy River last week.
A group of 14 teenagers and four chaperones from Drenthe, Michigan arrived on June 23rd to do missionary work in Rainy River.

OTTAWA -The National Aboriginal Health Organization (NAHO) today announced a new National Spokesperson for the National Aboriginal Role Model Program and 12 new national Aboriginal role models during an award ceremony at the Government Conference Centre in Ottawa.
