Province recognizes excellent program at Stratton school

Excellence in Education includes more than reading, writing, and arithmetic. Just take a look at Our Lady of the Way Elementary School in Stratton.
Recently the Ontario Ministry of Education has singled out 15 schools in Ontario that have excelled at keeping their students active, fit, and physically as well as mentally challenged and stimulated. The Ministry is so impressed they are sending a consulting firm to those schools to determine just how they do it.

It seems this spring that any walk into the long grass will net you at least one and probably a half dozen creepy-crawlies and after recent articles about Lyme disease, we are a little more conscious of the problems ticks can present.

Sight and Sound defeats RR 1-0

In last week’s Rainy River District Fastball League action there were the following results:
May 22nd
Sight and Sound defeated RR 1-0.
Big Island defeated Sabaskong 7-6.
Stratton defeated Barwick 3-2.

Former RR man wins EWC

Saturday night belonged to Bill Godin (formerly of RR) and Ralph Galusha.
The pair jumped out to a convincing lead on Friday and did nothing to relinquish on Saturday to capture this year’s Emo Walleye Classic—and the $11,000 top prize.

CT scanner implementation delayed until Fall

While the money has been raised the CT scanner has yet to be ordered by Riverside Health Care Facilities.
Teresa Hazel, Riverside Foundation Director, told the Record in an email Friday that, “We are still waiting for Ministry of Health approval to go to Tender. I think the process stalled a bit with the LHIN’s taking over funding of district hospitals.”

Hampton offers Chamber/Town advice: Bus service, electricity and pharmacy issues discussed

Last Thursday members of the Rainy River Chamber of Commerce and Town Council met with Kenora-RR Member of Provincial Parliament to discuss concerns in the community.
The first question concerned the loss of bus service last year when Grey Goose cancelled the run from Winnipeg to Thunder Bay via Rainy River.

Alzheimer Walk for Memories is this Saturday in RR

This Saturday the Alzheimer’s Society will hold its 5th annual Walk for Memories in Rainy River.
Last year nine participants raised a staggering $1,776.05 all of which is used to support local Alzheimers support programs and research.

RRHS soccer teams bring home silver

Last Wednesday in Kenora, the RRHS soccer teams competed in the single “A” NorWOSSAA Championships.
In Boys semi-final action, RRHS defeated Sioux Lookout 1-0 to advance to the finals against St. Thomas Aquinas of Kenora. The boys lost a hard fought final game by the score of 1-0, giving RRHS the silver medal.

RR beats Stratton in season opener

It was an exciting start to the season for the Rainy River Legion Fastball club last Tuesday when Stratton took them to an extra inning.
After a moment of silence, with the teams on the baselines, for long time umpire Gus Lindberg, who recently passed away, it was time to play ball.
