We had a very successful Science Fair this year. A lot of time and effort was put into the projects. The results are as follows:

The International Joint Commission (IJC) has issued a supplementary order for emergency regulation of the level of Rainy Lake and other boundary waters in the Rainy Lake watershed, effective February 27, 2007, in light of the severe drought conditions that have persisted for the past eight months and that may continue this spring.

Magicians urge kids not to start smoking

Area kids were treated to a special magic show with a message last week as the “Just Say MOE” came to Rainy River.
Magicians Bob and Cheryl Yelland from Niagara Falls, Ont., perform as Maxwell and Ta-dah respectively. Besides the tricks they do on stage their magic’s main message is about the cons of smoking and its effects on a person’s health.

While many ladies think he is a good looking man, the consensus at the National Enquirer is that Vaughn Murray of Rainy River is one ugly dude!
Murray who has lived in Rainy River most of his life has always had fun making ugly faces to entertain people.

Girls hockey awards doled out

While they finished the season 9-17, coaches Mike Mosher and Katie Hasbargen were pleased with the Lake of the Woods/Rainy River high school girls team.
Last Tuesday they held a windup at the Rainy River Curling Club at which they recapped the season and presented several awards.

Almer Godin wins Morson fish derby

Despite the snowstorm Saturday, the Morson fishing derby still managed to grow by about 10% this year.
119 anglers registered, braved the weather and caught some nice fish.

RRHS boys advance to NWOSSAA curling

The Rainy River High School (RRHS) Boys Curling team earned a spot at the upcoming NWOSSAAs March 5-6 in Thunder Bay.
The rink skipped by Mitch Seguin, Kyle Miller-third, Jared McQuaker-second and Matt Johnson-lead, went 3-2 at the NORWOSSAA playdowns on Feb. 19-20 in Kenora. After regular play there was a two way tie for 2nd place between RRHS and Kenora’s Beaver Brae. It came down to the last shot in an extra end with RRHS winning 7-5.

Former RR woman to curl at US Mixed Nationals

Former Rainy River woman Amelia Pirkl, 24, is off to the USA curling nationals March 19-24 in Grafton, North Dakota.
Pirkl plays lead on a mixed team based out of Fargo, ND. On Feb. 9-11 the team travelled to Williston, ND. to compete in the state playdowns and won!

SCAP kids live outside the box

That is all one can say when they see what the grade 4-8 students of Sturgeon Creek Alternative Program school (SCAP) did in Stratton recently.
As part of a Northwestern Health Unit (NWHU) program called Live Outside the Box, Step Inside the Community, students were encouraged to increase the amount of time they and their families spend being actively involved in their communities.
