Wiersema Rink wins 50th Annual RR Men’s Bonspiel

It was a photo finish at the 50th Annual Rainy River Men’s Curling Bonspiel Sunday.
It came down to an extra end between the Tim Nordin rink of Rainy River and Ed Wiersema’s team from Fort Frances. To cap it off it even came down the very last shot of the 9th end to decide the bonspiel’s winner.

Morson Fish Derby is this Saturday

It could be one of the best Morson Fish Derbies ever.
With weather expected to be mild and hardly any snow on Lake of the Woods, it is expected that many anglers will be able to fish just about any spot they want in the 10th Annual Morson Ice Fishing Live Release Derby this Saturday.

Town donates $10,000 to CT scanner

The Town of Rainy River did it’s bit Monday evening to help the district raise $1.5 million for a CT Scanner to be located in Fort Frances.
Council received a delegation from the Just Imagine Committee Monday evening. Committee chair Deanne Cunningham said, “Who would have imagined only three months ago that we would be here today so close to our goal.”

Local firemen off to curling nationals

Four local curlers are heading to a national championship after winning the Northern Ontario Firefighters Playdowns in Red Lake over the weekend.
The Tim Nordin rink, comprised of Nordin at skip, Dale Morrison-third, Dave Seguin-second and Dale Ossachuk-lead, represented both Rainy River and Dawson Volunteer Fire Depts. over the weekend. A total of 22 teams from as far away as Marathon and Thunder Bay competed there.

Bill 102 could see small town pharmacies fold up

If you have not heard of Bill 102 you might want to pay attention to this story.
Rainy River Drugs Pharmacist Sarah Berg was not even aware of this provincial bill until after second reading last year. Since then it has been read the required number of times and passed. It is set to go into effect March 1, 2007 and Berg along with many other smaller independent pharmacies are very concerned about their businesses’ very existence down the road.

CN conductors on strike

Local train crews have been without their conductors since Saturday morning.
Talks broke down between Canadian National Railway and the United Transportation Union, which set the wheels in motion to strike.

Man charged with assault

The OPP were called to 218 3rd St. in Rainy River Saturday morning in response to a domestic dispute.
Sheldon Earl Quill, 36, of no fixed address, was charged with assault.
