TORONTO, Feb. 5 /CNW/ - ‘Bag it back’ - a new deposit return program for recycling wine, beer and spirit containers - starts today. The program encourages Ontarians to return empty containers to The Beer Store for a refund, which means less waste going to landfill. By enhancing the Blue Box program’s effectiveness, deposit return will help increase Ontario’s waste diversion rate.

Annual quit smoking contest set to go

To kick off National Non-Smoking Week, the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) wants smokers to butt out - and wants to reward them for it. Today launches the 2007 Driven to Quit Challenge, a province-wide challenge to the more than 1.6 million Ontario smokers to quit smoking. One successful quitter will drive away with a 2007 luxury sedan.

Rainy River will not be without a place to take empty beer bottles and the new returnable liquor bottles after all.
As of this Wednesday Border Service will no longer be the local beer bottle return depot.

Prov. money makes RR Library better for kids

The Rainy River Public Library celebrated major improvements to its facilities on Saturday with an open house.
Two years ago the library board and staff began working on making the children’s section of the library more inviting and fun for kids to use.

Drive for a CT Scanner passes milestone

The Just Imagine campaign to raise money for a CT scanner in the Rainy River District is more than 2/3 of the way to its goal.
A little over a week ago a $35,000 donation from employees at Abitibi put them over the $1 million mark. While that was a substantial donation, Riverside Foundation for Health Care Director Teresa Hazel said the number of small donations is really starting to add up. “We are getting strong support from everyone across the district. I have never seen so many memorial donations. We are truly grateful to all the families and people who have contributed.”

Abattoir projects said to be close to reality

The Abattoir Steering Committee of the Rainy River Cattlemen’s Association (RRCA) told the members that they are very close to announcing an abattoir for the Rainy River District.
