Many fellow gardeners have contacted me, this summer, with concerns about their bearded irises. Many gardeners may find that their bearded irises did not bloom this year or if they did bloom they seemed to have smaller and less flowers than usual. This has happened to many gardeners with multiple varieties of bearded irises including many of my own irises of which I have over 30 varieties.

As the old saying goes, you only get one chance to make a first impression.
For Rainy River product Greg Beller, that chance came two weeks ago when he attended the New York Rangers’ prospect development camp in the Big Apple.
And he certainly made the most of the opportunity.

If you are looking for action the place will be Morson this weekend as the first annual Morson Bass International casts off.
Organizers have planned more than just a tournament for people of all ages. Things will kick off Friday morning with a pancake breakfast at 6 a.m. Anglers will leave at 7:30 on a hunt for some big bass and hopefully a shot at thousands of dollars in prize money.

St. Paul, Minn. - The stretch of hot, sultry weather from mid-summer into September, often called the “dog days,” takes its name from ancient Roman mythology. But lately it’s been getting a new meaning in Minnesota. The dog days are also when some lakes and rivers turn green and soupy with algae, and some of those algae can be harmful to animals and humans. In fact, several dogs died last summer from contact with toxic algae blooms.

Have you been disappointed so far this summer with some of your vegetable crops? Many gardeners find that they are disappointed with some of their crops like radishes, lettuce and other greens, beets and peas this season. Because of the hot and dry conditions that we have been experiencing, many of these crops have either produced poorly or were producing nicely and then quickly went to seed. If you have been disappointed year after year in the poor results from your “salad crops” then you may want to consider planting a second rotation in August.
