The final chair for Charity arrived at the Record office last week. It is seen on the far left and was done by Patti Diebel of Rainy River. It joins the hand-made Andirondack Chair (by Jim Cumming of Fort Frances), and two other hand painted chairs by Linda Plumridge (Fort Frances) and Vivian Locking (Rainy River). Each of them will be raffled off at the 2nd Annual Linda Johnston Memorial Alzheimer Dinner this Saturday. Tickets are available at the Legion, RR Drugs, Petersons and RR Record. Special flag

Rainy River Mayor Debbie Ewald, left, accepted a flag from the Kenora-Rainy River Alzheimer Society last week in recognition of January being Alzheimer Month. Presenting the flag on behalf of the Society was local Alzheimer's fundraiser Bob Johnston, right. Usually the flag is flown in front of the town office in January. However, due to the excessive snowfalls this year it will be on display inside the town office as crews could not get equipment near the flag pole to raise it.

Moving in

Bud and Laurene Hannam of 203 River Ave. in Rainy River had a noisey neighbour move into their front yard last week. A Pileated Woodpecker decided that their maple tree in the front yard needed some work. Bud said the bird which pecked out quite a hole in one of the trunks worked at it for a couple of days, making a hole larger than the bird's body which was about 15 inches tall.

No turning back now!

Kayle Stamler, left, and his mom, Ashley, both of Rainy River, take a leap into the frigid waters of Rainy Lake on New Year's day to raise money for the Rainy River Sk8 Park. This was the second year they participated in the Polar Plunge in Fort Frances and raised $480, half of which goes to the RR Sk8 Park.

Gas Leake

Sunday afternoon Rainy River Town Crew members were busy clearing the massive snowfall we had on Saturday. Late in the day one of the plows sheared off a capped gas line behind the former Susan's Corner Store. RR Volunteer Firemen and the O.P.P. were on the scene almost immediately. The gas company arrived later and recapped it.

Chairs for charity!

As January is Alzheimer's Month, the efforts of the local fundraising committee are now underway. The above hand crafted chair was made by Jim Cumming and is one of four to be raffled off this month. The others will be hand painted chairs by local and area artists (watch for more details). There will also be the 2nd Annual Linda Johnston Alzheimer Dinner to Remember on January 24th. Watch for tickets for both the raffle and the dinner at select local stores this week and throughout next few weeks.
