Eltjo Wiersema, left, of the Rainy River Valley Pumpkin Festival, presented a cheque to Meaghan Shanks, Rainy River Rec. Director, for $500 last week! This was the money collected at the door at the giant pumpkin festival recently. The Recreation Board will use the money to help with ice plant start up costs this month.

Tyler Goodison of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) visited Rainy River High School last week to show a video about tragic stories of young people killed in accidents involving drunk drivers. He asked for volunteer Ericka Tymkin, right, to pretend she was drunk and then asked the audience why anyone would get in a car with someone like that.

Surrounded by family and friends on Friday, October 10th, Clinton Park, left 104, and his wife Doris Park, right, 96, celebrated their 75th Wedding Anniversary at the Rainy River Long Term Care Facility.

The RRHS Brick by Brick Campaign was recognized by the Rainy River District School Board last week. Every year the board of education meets in Rainy River at least once. Board Chair Dan Belluz presented Brick by Brick committee members Deidre Wilson, center and Teagan Miller with a certificate. The group raised more than $13,000 to build a school in Siere Leone.

After almost not happening locally, the annual Rainy River CIBC run/walk for the cure for breast cancer took place this past Sunday with about seven participants.

Last week CN crews worked diligently on improving Government Road crossing ripping out the old one and beginning to widen it and put crossing arms on it. Once that work is completed the crossing at Little Street will be closed permanently.
The town crew has been busy widening out Railway Avenue most of the summer in preparation for the eventual closure.

Students from Riverview Elementary School held several fund raising activities last week including a run/walk on Thursday. There was no word at press time as to how much money they raised for Cancer research.
