The table beet (also known as garden beet, blood turnip or red beet) is a popular garden vegetable. Beet tops are an excellent source of vitamin A and the roots are a good source of vitamin C. The tops can be cooked or served fresh as greens and the roots may be pickled for salads or cooked whole, then sliced or diced.

If you are a regular user of the exercise room at Rainy River Health Centre you may have run into Tina Venne, a University of Manitoba student studying physiotherapy.
She is working under the umbrella of Jeff Wright in Fort Frances, a fully licensed physiotherapist. And while she has another year to go before she is fully licensed, she is able to help people with their exercise routines both at the hospital and/or at home.

Unlike days gone by, Riverside Health Care Facilities held its annual meeting in Rainy River Thursday with more board members than audience.
Without any controversial issues affecting hospitals in Emo or Rainy River attendance has been sparse the past few years, unlike a decade ago, when the arena in Rainy River was packed.

Riverview Elementary School in Rainy River graduated 18 students from grade 8 last Tuesday evening.
Master of Ceremonies and gr. 8 teacher Mark Jodoin spoke about the changes the class experienced over the year. “At the beginning of the year I had the students write down some goals they wanted to accomplish over the course of the year.”

The carrot is a hardy, cool-season biennial. Because we grow it for the thickened root it produces in its first growing season we never see it for the flower is produces in the second season.

Three years ago Great Beavers, muddied the serenity of Rainy River‚s peaceful waters and the mystery was put to rest only when Rainy River’s Town Crier, Doug Giles and our own Mad Trapper‚ Wayne McCarthy managed to capture a Great Beaver. Their plans for fame and fortune were short lived, however, when animal rights activist Jordon Beller, engineered a jail break for the beast, and spirited it away back to the remote headwaters of Miller’s Creek. Since then only sporadic sightings of the elusive creature have been reported.

Early last week the last missing person in a boating accident, Caine Comegan, 16, was found on Lake of the Woods having drowned.
Police as well as volunteers and Lake of the Woods Search and Rescue had been searching for two missing boaters since Thursday, June 15th in the Sabaskong Bay area of Lake of the Woods.

This Saturday family and friends will be encouraged to have Fun in the Park on Canada Day in Rainy River.
Hannam Park will be the hub of activities for the day. The Rainy River Playschool/Early Year’s Centre will be hosting the family entertainers “Jim and I” at the park.

The class of 2006 began their adult lives last Wednesday when commencement ceremonies were held at Rainy River High School.
The 24 graduates marched in to the gymnasium there while the crowd of about 400 people watched. While a happy and momentous occasion for them, a tragedy overshadowed the week.

Biggest Losers
The grand finale of the Biggest Losers program was held on Sunday, June 18th.
Thirty two members weighed in and waited in anticipation for the math to be done and the Biggest Loser announced! It was no surprise that April Trenchard was the Biggest Loser, losing a total of 47 lbs. in the 12 week program and taking home the top prize of $300 as well as the coveted ‘massage’ complimentary of Cheryl Gauthier of the Harris Hill Resort.
