Legion planning Super Sunday party

The Rainy River Legion is moving ahead with all its activities. We will be holding our Super Bowl party on February 5th. We will start with smear being played (check the paper for smear start time next week in the ad) the football pre show and game will follow. Chili will be served and there will be lots of prizes. Come on out and enjoy.

Boshcoff wins RR-Thunder Bay riding

It was a cliffhanger finish for RR-Thunder Bay Liberal MP Ken Boshcoff and NDP challenger John Rafferty Monday evening.
With 105 of 203 polls reporting Rafferty had a narrow 87 vote lead.. Boshcoff then took the lead with 130 polls reporting, but just barely. He had 7,993 and Rafferty had 7,917.

Angels among us

If you woke up Friday morning and could not figure out where all the black snow angels came from, well you were not alone.
Members of the Rainy River Youth Action Alliance (YAA), along with several volunteers, travelled around Rainy River Thursday evening and made snow angels. They then painted them black symbolizing death caused by tobacco.

District leaders to meet

Bergland will play host to the leaders of the Rainy River District this Saturday as it holds the annual meeting of the Rainy River District Municipal Association.
Delegates from as far away as Atikokan will gather at the Bergland Hall to discuss issues that affect the communities across the district.

Town budget on track, but water budget running low

Rainy River Town Council met Thursday instead of Monday last week to hold its first meeting of the new year.
Council also had a special meeting earlier in the day to discuss the situation with Clerk Administrator Deb Bowman. The meeting was opened and then went in camera with legal counsel present. No motions came from the meeting and council was not at liberty to divulge any details at the time.

The top three teams in each division advance to NORWOSSA curling playdowns to be held in early February in Dryden.
RRHS has both a boys and girls team and both of them are advancing to NORWOSSAs.

The pines are probably the most important trees in North America. As you know, pine has, for centuries, been made into furniture. In the past 25 years or so, there has been quite a popular revival of pine furniture. Pine is also used for flooring, for structural timbers, for pit-props, and in fact, for all most any situation in which wood can be used.

RRHS students to offer free drama presentation Friday

If you like drama productions, then Rainy River High School’s Grade 10 drama class has a treat for you this Friday and it is absolutely free!
Teacher Laura Armistead has been working with the 19 students to put together a performance during class time. The production is called “Sorority Girls Slumber Party Massacre” and is a parody of movies like Friday the 13th. The play was written by Angus Kohn of Winnipeg and was performed at the Fringe Festival there.
