O.P.P. lay several charges against Rainy River man

On February 4th, 2006 at approximately 5:20 pm the Rainy River OPP attempted to stop a SUV towing a trailer on Hwy #11 west of Worthington Road # 3. The vehicle continued its trip traveling at approximately 70 km/h. The vehicle was observed disobeying road signs and failing to yield to other motorists. The 1995 GMC Jimmy was eventually stopped at the junction of Blue Road # 2 and Hwy # 612.

This is truly a northern bird. It breeds all around the pole, in North America, Europe and Asia. Even in winter, it stays well to the north, perhaps going as far south as southern Ontario. Sometimes large numbers move south, and other times only a few. Apparently this is caused by variations in the food supply, and not by the severity of the weather, as people used to think. Mainly they just stay put, and put up with 40 below weather, just like we do.

Bergland 50+ group forms

The first meeting of the newly formed 50+ seniors group was held at the Bergland Hall on Wednesday, February 1st.
The purpose of the group is to get together for fun and recreation and to enjoy activities that are of special interest to the members. Some of the activities will include cards, carpet bowling, various board games, dancing, exercising, walking, ‘jamming’ having invited speakers in to address special interests and needs of the group; etc.

Getting a jump on the growing season

By starting seeds indoors you can often extend your growing season by up to ten weeks. This can be very beneficial for plants that have a longer “days to maturity” time frame. You can even start some of the newer hybrid varieties with shorter “days to maturity” time frames indoors and then sow some directly into the garden so you can have a harvest of produce early and over an extended period of time throughout the summer months.

Crossing meeting set for tonight

In last week’s Record we reported that town council would be holding a public meeting about the possibility of closing the Little St. Railway crossing. The meeting is actually scheduled for Tuesday Feb. 7th (not last night as we reported).

Tolen project nixed

At a special meeting last Monday evening, Rainy River Town Council learned of some possibly bad news.
Robert Tolen of Gameland Wood Products had asked council for permission to erect a temporary building/structure on the property he is currently occupying at 716 Atwood Ave. so that he could start manufacturing utility sheds there.
