Librarian Jodi Budreau sets out new talking books on CD at the Rainy River Library January 22. The audiobooks were purchased thanks to a donation from the Major Hughes Branch #54 of the Royal Canadian Legion.

This is one of the three chairs being artistically decorated by local artists. The chairs are being raffled off to raise money for Alzheimers. Tickets are on sale in the area. Draw is this Saturday at the Linda Johnston Memorial Alz. Dinner in Rainy River.

Last Wednesday at about 4:00 p.m. the Rainy River and Dawson volunteer fire departments were called out to a fire at the Sleeman dump. The fire was put out in 30 minutes. Seen here in this photo is John Jonassen putting the dump fire out.

While people have been longing for a break in the long cold snap the region was in, the quick warm up last week let the warm weather curse out of the bottle at the corner of Third St. and Broadway Avenue in Rainy River. A water main broke last Thursday and put the town crew to work, jackhammering and digging through frozen earth, to fix it.

The New Year’s Baby for 2014 was born on New Year’s Day. Little Jasper Isla Dennis was born at La Verendrye Hospital at 8:37am weighing in at 7lbs, 15oz.

A highlight of the Winter Bird Count was a Northern Shrike, like this one photographed December 5 in La Vallee Township. A predatory songbird, the Shrike comes south in winter to hunt smaller birds at feeders.

On Thursday January 2 2014 about 9:30 a.m. the Rainy River and Dawson Volunteer Fire Depts. were called out to the Rainy River Canada Customs building for a gas leak. Union gas also attended the scene to look for leaks.
