Rainy River Record

A special ribbon cutting was held last Thursday to reopen the Rainy River District Women's Institute Museum in Emo. Fr. l. to r., Richard McKinnon (representing Sarah Campbell, MPP), Annie van Rozen (Chair of Museum Board) Linda Hamilton (Trillium Foundation) and Emo Mayor Vince Sheppard.

Students from Mr. Mike McInerney's music class at Riverview Elementary School visited Heritage House on Thursday to perform a number of songs including old time favourites like "The Cat Came Back," and "The Good Old Hockey Game," for local senior citizens. Rebecca Tolen, center standing, of Rainy River, was one of the Border Ballers that competed in fun with the Harlem Ambassadors basketball team last Tuesday at the Lake of the Woods school in Baudette. The event was a fundraiser for school athletics and very entertaining. The Ambassadors put on a show similar to the Harlem Globe Trotters.

Students from Riverview Elementary School visited Heritage House last Thursday and performed several songs for senior citizens that both live there and were visiting. About a dozen enjoyed the half hour of entertainment. The students have been learning the music under teacher Mike McInerney.

Nine students from Riverview had great finishes at the District Cross-country meet on Oct. 4, 2013 in Devlin. They are, back row, l. to r., Morgan Desserre, 10th-gr. 7 boys, Jackson Arpin-1st gr. 7 boys, Kirsten Armstrong, 37th-gr. 5 girls and Lara Wood, 4th-gr. 7 girls. Fr. row, l. to r., Ireland Blakeney, 21st-gr. 5 girls, Katelyn Brown, 20th-gr. 5 girls, Jack Wood, 2nd-gr. 4 boys, Michael Vogan-16th-gr. 4 boys and Taya Hagarty, 2nd-gr. 5 girls.

The First St. Waterworks replacement project is nearly completed. The Town Crew and some extra labourers hired for the project were nearly to the highway Monday.

Mark Jodoin, of Pinewood, was recognized for this stellar wrestling career in the late 1970s and early 80s at Lakehead University. He is seen here with a picture board that has his and the other inductees photos from back in the day!

The Sunday school class of 1948 sang Happy Birthday to Guthrie U.C. last Sunday to mark the 100th birthday of the church in Devlin. Shown here are Lois Caul, Faye Davis, Freeda Carmody, Audrey Forrester, Mildred Lalonde & Irene Grenner. Mildred Lalonde was the first baby baptised at Guthrie U.C. 100 years ago.

Dave Armstrong, left, and his brother Darren, pose with two of the fish they caught on day 2 to win the 2013 RRWT Crown! The one Darren is holding tipped the scales at 7.16 lbs. Their two day total was 24.22 lbs. Jon O'Connor, left, and Kirk Wood, hoisted up the four fish they caught on day 2 of the tourney. They were the leaders on day 1 and almost had enough to win it all, falling 6/100ths of a pound off the mark. The received $7,500 for second place.
