It's Alzheimer Month!

Local Alzheimer Society volunteers Bob Johnston, center, and Marlene McNally, right, presented Mayor Deb Ewald with the Alzheimer Society Flag last Friday. January is National Alzheimer Month and the Town of Rainy River will display the flag at the Town Hall, seen in the background, for the entire month. Various activities are happening across the region to raise awareness of the disease and money for the Alzheimer Society this month. In Rainy River the Annual Linda Johnston Memorial Alzheimer Dinner will be held January 26th at the Rainy River Legion.

New Years baby arrives!

The New Year’s Baby for 2013 is Kayenna Lynn Griffith. She was born at La Verendrye Hospital in Fort Frances on January 2nd at 4:22 p.m. weighing in at 8 lbs – 15 oz. Proud parents are Tyrell and Alyssa of Sioux Narrows, Ontario. Each year, gifts and gift baskets are provided for the New Year’s Baby courtesy of Canada Safeway, Fort Floral, Pharmasave, and Shoppers Drug Mart.

Dancing to the season!

Riverview School held its annual Christmas concert during lunch hour on Dec. 19th instead of the traditional evening program due to the ongoing union actions against the provincial government's Bill 115. This group did some precision line dancing for the packed house in Riverview's gym. Cultural curriculum

RRHS grade 9 geography class hosted a special open house last week. Teams of students researched different cultures that immigrated to Canada. They put together displays and offered cuisine from the culture they researched. There were eight different cultures on display and to taste, including Polish, Italian, Punjabi, Mexican, French, Ojibway, Chinese and Portugeuse. Teacher Laura Armistead and a student are seen here sampling sausage at the Polish table who also had perogies to try.

All I want for Christmas...

Rainy River was a busy place for Santa Claus on Saturday. He attended the Rainy River Christmas Extravaganza, visited with kids, like Jasmine Holmes, and participated in the annual Parade of Lights.

The Rainy River Clinic won the top float honour and $50 in cash in the RR Christmas Parade of Lights! Coming in second was the Best Start Hub and they won $25.
