Rainy River Record

Riverview School's girls basketball team recently won the Crossroad's Tournament in Devlin. The finished 2nd in their pool but beat Sturgeon Creek by one point in the semi-final game to advance and beat Crossroads 20-8.

The Ontario government announced last week that to save money it will be closing several Travel Info. Centres in province, including Rainy River, Kenora and Fort Frances. About 15 years ago the Rainy River centre was relocated from the Canadian Customs plaza to Heritage Square in hopes of boosting visitor numbers there.

Cody Heyens, son of Wanda and Ted Heyens of Stratton, had a banner year at college. In his first year at Fanshawe College he curled his way to the top several times! In Feb. he curled at the 2012 OCAA Curling Championships (Provincials) as a Third on Fanshawe's Mixed Team. They won silver! Then in March he curled on their Men's Team and they competed an the Nationals and won gold going undfeated 8-0! He was also named to the All Star team at the aformentioned Mixed event.

Last Tuesday morning one would have thought the Rainy River would be another several days before it went out. There was ice all across it and as of Monday it had only gone out just west of Pinewood. But this year the ice was like a cube in a glass. It started melting from the middle as record temperatures heated it up and by 2 p.m. Tuesday it had opened from the middle at first to wide open! It was the third earliest date on record.
