Smashing sucesses!

From l. to r., Skylar Arpin, Justin Moen and Courtney Hansen will be competing at NWOSSAs this week. Seniors Moen and Hansen hope to advance to the All Ontarios, but juniors cannot go any farther than NORWOSSAS. However, Arpin, a junior, will get to compete in an exhibition tournament running at NWOSSAs.

Jason Burnstick spoke to RRHS students Friday and played music for them on his double-neck lap-slide guitar. His presentation was part of a week long anti-bullying campaign at the school.

Fall prevention

Seniors began a 10 week program Monday using Tai Chi, education and nutrition to help prevent falls. The program, SAGES, is run every Monday at the Covenant Church in Rainy River. Seen here doing Tai Chi this past Monday, fr. l. to r., Susan Douglas, Jessie Bodnarchuk, Kathy Rose and Mark Douglas.

About 110 people were treated to a Tribute to Frankie Valli by Paul Fracassi, center, and company, at the Rainy River Community Centre April 2nd. By all accounts it was a very entertaining evening.

OLWS kids honoured

The Northwest Catholic District School Board recognized Our Lady of the Way School’s Student Council: Kurt Desserre, Rebecca Zimmerman, Caitlin Big George and Braydon Kreger. Kurt is a Playground Activity Leader in School (PAL), which is promoted by the Northwestern Health Unit. PAL organizes and facilitates recess activities for daily exercise. Rebecca is also a member of PAL and received an award for her involvement in the D.A.R.E. Program. Rebecca informed Trustees about Voyageur Day held at Our Lady of the Way every year and highlighted all the activities.

Casting their votes

On April 2, keen readers voted for their favorite books at the Rainy River Public Library’s storytime program. The books are from the “Blue Spruce” reading contest to chose Ontario’s favorite storybook for readers in kindergarten to grade 3. The winner will be announced by the Ontario Library Association in Toronto later this spring.

Slaughtering the fish

As soon as the ice goes out, anglers, especially Americans, attack the open water to catch Spring time walleyes. Some argue this should not be allowed as many fish are full of eggs and getting ready to spawn. But by law they can fish, as they were last Thursday near Pinewood, until the season closes mid April.
