Melanie Mathieson

The last column provided you with some information on whether you may want to install mulch products in your yard or garden. The terminology around gardening can be a bit confusing at times, never mind a topic like that of mulch.

Fr. Dan Debano

In the Book of Daniel (9:3,4-10), we hear the Israelites confess that they have not kept the Lord’s Commandments. Obviously, the Ten Commandments are foundational to all Christian Faiths, and we are called to keep them. But living our faith doesn’t stop with the stone tablets Moses presented to the Israelites.

Gary Sliworksky
Ag. Rep.

With all the emphasis on vaccinating cattle it’s easy to get the impression you just need to vaccinate and your herd will be protected. Unfortunately that isn’t true. While vaccination is the foundation of every infectious disease control program, it can’t do it all alone.

To mulch or not to mulch?

Melanie Mathieson
Gardening Guru

I’m a big advocate of adding mulch to your garden. If we didn’t use mulch, we could never keep up with the weeds, especially with the large sized gardens I have in my yard. We mulch around the fruit trees with bark (or you could use wood chips) to keep the sucker and weed growth to a minimum and make mowing around the tree much easier. We mulch the perennial beds with pine bark to conserve soil moisture and minimize weeds. As far as adding mulch to the vegetable garden I have had quite a few experiments over the years but haven’t come up with a totally foolproof solution to date but will recommend some things for you to try in a future column.
