Town gets tough on infiltrators

Where are you sending your surface/storm water?
That is a question that Rainy River Town Council officially will be asking if they have not already. On Monday council passed a bylaw prohibiting people from discharging or redirecting surface water into the town’s sanitary sewer system.

Just like so many costs of living, the cost of water and sewer services will soon be going up in Rainy River.
Last night Rainy River Town Council passed a new Misc. User Fees bylaw that had an increase in water and sewer rates for its citizens.

Award for bravery Dawn Drennan honoured by national police organization

It is not a day that Dawn Drennan likes to think about but last week her quick and brave actions earned her a very prestigious honour.
It was nearly a year to the day when she was presented an Award of Excellence from the Canadian Professional Police Association (CPPA) for her actions involving an accident at the Eugene LaCroix residence about 15 miles north of Rainy River.

The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation announces its second National t-shirt Design Contest today. Open to all, it invites Canadians to translate their thoughts and feelings about breast cancer into this year’s look for two t-shirt designs, one for participants, and one for survivors.

Willy Walleye run set for June 3rd

Temperatures are rising and it‚s time to get back to exercising outside. Solvay Pharmaceuticals and the Triple A Booster Club invite you to take part in the annual Willie Walleye 5K Run/Walk to be held Saturday, June 3, at 9 a.m. Race headquarters is at the ambulance garage behind The Ranch House restaurant, and the race will start and finish on 1st Street.

LoW revamps user fees

The Lake of the Woods Township Council held a Public Meeting on March 7, 2006 at 7pm at Bergland. This meeting to discuss and update user fees, planning applications and fees for the cemeteries. The Township will now be directly responsible for opening and closing graves; for this there will be a charge of $500.00 with an additional charge of $50.00 for locating the plot.

Riverview School to host Literacy Celebration

The Rainy River District School Board will be hosting a Family Literacy Celebration on April 29, 2006 at schools across the district.
In Rainy River teachers Jennelle and Amanda Lowes are coordinating an afternoon of learning and fun for everyone ages 4-adult.

Occasional teachers seeking parity

Several members of the Ontario Secondary School Teacher’s Federation braved the cold and wet weather Friday in Rainy River to provide an informational picket.
The OSSTF members are occasional teachers who are concerned by the fact that they are not treated equally to regular teachers even though they are just as qualified.
