This little bird is a finch, which means that it is related to sparrows, buntings, grosbeaks and so on. It really is a sort of nondescript little bird, mostly brown streaked. It does have quite noticeable yellow bars on its wings, but you can see these only when the bird is flying.

Plans for Best Start childcare in Rainy River schools are still on track, despite similar plans being shelved in Fort Frances by the Board of Education.
Efforts by Rainy River Play school Inc. are still moving ahead to be in place by this fall.

The two previous champions from 2003 and 2004 met in the ‘A’ event finals at the Rainy River Curling Club Mixed Bonspiel Sunday.
Tim Nordin of Rainy River, who won it in 2003, and Craig Armstrong of Stratton, who won in 2004, were the top two undefeated teams at the 16 team bonspiel.

When Greg Jacobsen, Peter Pasqualino and Sarah McArthur graduate from Thunder Bay’s Confederation College in May their first professional job will be working with Academy Award winner, Paul Haggis (‘Crash’) on the second annual MAKE IT SHORT MOVIE PROJECT. Jacobsen (28) won the chance to direct the workshop film by writing a hilarious romantic comedy script, entitled ‘CHASING MASCOTS’. Pasqualino (23) will shoot the 16mm film, with McArthur (25) taking on editing duties.

Breast screening program turns 15

The Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP) is celebrating 15 years of delivering high quality breast screening to Ontario women. Since the screening program began the deaths from breast cancer have been reduced by 29% in women age 50-69.

ABC has the “Extreme Makeover”, NBC has the “Biggest Loser” and now women in Northwestern Ontario will be offered their chance to have a makeover. The “Women’s Health Makeover” will include a visit with a massage therapist, a consultation with a dietitian or nutritionist, a consultation with a personal trainer or fitness consultant and a hair and cosmetic makeover.
