Neil Gushulak, a Rainy River native, identified the Brittle Prickly Pear Cactus last week for the Record. He is seen here holding it. Gushulak is an Engineer first and a biologist second. When studying biology he specializes in snakes and cactus.

Every summer the Rainy River Royal Canadian Legion helps young people attend Legion Sports Camps at the International Peace Gardens. Last week Shauna Moen, right, of Rainy River, attended Basketball camp.

A work in progress!

After 40 years the dreams and efforts of citizens on both sides of the border started to take shape in the last two years of the 1950s. Here it is seen about one third of the way done. A total of six spans at a length of 1,282 feet were eventually erected and have served the border towns for five decades as of July 30, 2010. See more photos on page seven.

Ben Frankin closing

Part of the landscape in Baudette for decades, the area's last local department store has announced it is going out of business. Last Wednesday they began liquidating the inventory. The business was originally located where Ronnings is now in Baudette.

Leaning tower of...

While their job is to provide information to tourists, the Rainy River Ontario Travel Information Centre was the scene of its own tourist attraction. Its tower, sporting the building's sign, began to lean. Ed Kaun and Sons of Fort Frances has been busy this week repairling it and sidewalks in front of the provincially funded facility.

Worth the wait!
